We are reaching out to the community seeking artists for our upcoming exhibit, The Hobbit: Sharing An Adventure, launching May 1, 2026. Our hope is that we receive applications that include proposals for sculptures to be incorporated into the exhibit photobooth. The two project sculptures are of Smaug the dragon and the character Gollum.

Details About Smaug the Dragon Sculpture

  • Measurements for the area where the sculpture will be installed are approximately 4 feet wide, 6 feet in length, 8 feet in height.
  • The photo to the right is a view of the space and the current temporary exhibit that is installed. The centre between the two pillars of the recreated festival stage (designed by Off The Wall) is the location where we plan to feature the Smaug head. There is an outlet available on the wall behind it with necessary extension cords.
  • We have large black curtains that can hollow out the background of the stage and surround the head.
  • We can provide 2.5 foot square display blocks that can be temporarily used to prop the dragon’s head off the floor (free standing).
  • Part of the vision is to place on the floor and surround the dragon’s head with treasure/gold horde. This component would also be an opportunity for guests to add a fake gold coin to the display horde, which they could retrieve from the front desk.
  • Once the exhibit closes in May 2027 and as part of the terms of the negotiated contract, we could also arrange for its return to the artist and/or promote its sale to guests while it is on display, for which the buyer could retrieve when the exhibit ends.
  • Due to our not-for-profit charitable status, we are aiming for something around $500.00 – $850.00, which is why we do not plan on keeping the sculpture and can arrange for its return to the artist and/or resale of the item once the exhibit closes.

Details About Gollum Sculpture

  • Measurements for the area where the sculpture will be installed are approximately 3 x 3 foot space and 8 feet in height.
  • The photo to the right is a view of the space and the current temporary exhibit that is installed. The left of centre beside one pillar of the recreated festival stage (designed by Off The Wall) is the location where we plan to feature Gollum.
  • We have large black curtains that can hollow out the background of the stage and surround the sculpture
  • We can provide 2.5 foot square display blocks that can be temporarily used to prop Gollum off the floor ( object will be free standing).
  • Once the exhibit closes in May 2027 and as part of the terms of the negotiated contract, we could also arrange for its return to the artist and/or promote its sale to guests while it is on display, for which the buyer could retrieve when the exhibit ends.
  • Due to our not-for-profit charitable status, we are aiming for something around $500.00, which is why we do not plan on keeping the sculpture and can arrange for its return to the artist and/or resale of the item once the exhibit closes.
  • If there is an engagement component where guests can interact or touch the sculpture, this would be an attractive asset for the exhibit

We would be excited to discuss a potential collaboration with local art teachers who would like to involve their class, and/or candidates that they suspect may be interested in participating.

We encourage art teachers that would like to learn more about this opportunity for their students to contact, Megan Patterson, Manager of Education & Exhibits Lead at 519-393-5315 or email groups@stratfordperthmuseum.ca.

If there are further inquiries about this project and the sculptures that are being installed into the exhibit, please do not hesitate to forward attachments, proposals, information, and inquiries to groups@stratfordperthmuseum.ca.
