The Stratford Perth Museum’s commitment to sharing the history of Perth County extends beyond our gallery walls and into the natural landscape surrounding the museum.

Located behind the museum, the Tom Orr Memorial Perth County Historical Walk features a network of accessible trails and 15 interpretive storyboards that chronologically explore the rich and colourful history of Stratford, Perth County, and the surrounding region.

Beginning with the Ice Age and the area’s earliest inhabitants, the trail guides visitors through nearly 200 years of local history — from early settlement and the arrival of rail to agriculture, industry, tourism, wartime contributions, and the continued growth of our region today.

The trail system was developed as part of the museum’s long-term site plan and reflects the Stratford Perth Museum’s commitment to creating meaningful outdoor learning experiences for visitors of all ages. Research for the historical signage was completed by the Stratford Perth Museum with assistance from the Stratford-Perth Archives and the Ontario Archaeological Society.

The trails are free to explore and open year-round, 24 hours a day.

The Tom Orr Memorial Perth County Historical Walk was named in honour of Tom Orr, a tireless civic leader and passionate supporter of the Stratford Perth Museum and Archives.

In addition to the historical walk, the museum grounds also feature a naturalized stormwater pond, bee hives that produce honey for the museum gift shop, and Tales & Trails — a seasonal self-guided outdoor story experience designed for children and families.

Tales & Trails invites visitors to stroll the pathways while reading a children’s story one page at a time on mounted placards along the trail. The featured books rotate seasonally and combine literacy, movement, outdoor exploration, and family fun.
