MORE ABOUT GROUNDS FOR GOODNESS
Grounds for Goodness is an evolving and participatory arts project, by Ruth Howard, with many artists, partners, participants and places. The program explores themes of ‘social goodness’: occasions when people behave in good ways towards each other, especially in times of crisis and across group identities. This Stratford Episode will take place at the Stratford Perth Museum, in partnership with program organizer, SpringWorks Festival. It will be an evolving interactive installation, open during museum hours, with scheduled times for drop-in visitors, workshops and a final presentation. Items from Grounds for Goodness to be shown, displayed and used include:
- several hundred “Story Cards”, by past participants of all ages, with new Stratford additions.
- assorted small found and sculpted figures for expressing stories,
- recorded musical soundscape.
- collection of short films.
- visual and fabric arts creations.
- Costumes, props and items for display and performance
Participatory activities options include: making story cards (writing/drawing), embroidery, mini-sculptures, playing with and arranging small objects, gentle performance with small objects and sounds.
ARTIST, PROGRAM LEAD & FOUNDER
Ruth Howard is an interdisciplinary artist and founding Artistic Director of Jumblies, a community-engaged company based in Toronto. With Jumblies, Ruth created and produced multi-year residencies in Toronto neighbourhoods, leading to large-scale productions and lasting Offshoots, produced cross-country tours festivals of new works, films, publications and many other collaborative community projects. Ruth has worked across Canada and in the UK as a theatre designer; taught at many universities, colleges and schools; mentored many artists and organizations; and won awards and recognition for her work, most recently a JAYU Foundation Lifetime Achievement Arts For Human Rights Award (2021). As of January 2023, Ruth has left her Artistic Director role at Jumblies, continuing to work as an independent artist and consultant. Current projects include Grounds for Goodness, CarePlay, Belongings (with Femmes du Feu Creations in Welland) and Naivelt Stories-100th Project (with the Camp Naivelt community and the United Jewish People’s Order).
